Captain Randy Wilson has fished the waters off of Tamarindo for almost 30-years! The coast of Guanacaste here is famous for both the variety of fish, their large numbers and size. Fishing here is catching and taking home true tales and memories that will last you a lifetime.
Tamarindo is a great destination for your fishing vacation. The most popular tourist destinations in the Guanacaste Province on Costa Rica’s NW Pacific coast.Tamarindo offers guests a wide variety of lodging, dining, tours and some of the prettiest beaches in the country.
With its own local airport, getting to and from Tamarindo is quick and easy. Besides all these great benefits, Tamarindo is home to some of the best sport fishing on earth!
Simply put, we are closest to the fish. Our boats never run more than an hour (usually only 30-40 minutes) to look for bill fish. Spend your time catching fish, not chasing them!
The waters here are world famous for year ‘round sport fishing. While each year may be slightly different, the catch rate for all our game fish (Sailfish, Blue, Black and Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Roosterfish, Snapper) is fairly consistent all months of the year. There are no specific seasons here.
Traditionally, April through September are excellent for Sails, Marlin, Tuna and Dolphin. The seas are calm and it may rain in the afternoon. Our run time is very short as the fish can be found close to Tamarindo.
October through December sees the transition from rainy season to dry season here and we catch a variety of species, including billfish. December through March are often windy so boats run up to an hour to the south to get to the good fishing out of the wind. Marlin and large Yellow fin Tuna are plentiful then, as well as Sailfish and Dorado.
Randy Wilson, came to Costa Rica in 1974. Since then, he has fished Costa Rica's Pacific waters extensively, literally on a daily basis. He has spearheaded the effort to conserve the game fish in Costa Rica by developing his own techniques and lures in the 80's.
These techniques have been refined over the years to ensure the proper handling of sailfish and marlin during hookup, fight and release. Randy has written numerous articles on his fishing philosophy and is an authority on protecting large gamefish through innovative catch & release techniques.
We believe that hook retrieval is the ultimate form of catch & release and Randy is a pioneer in the effort to conserve the big game fish of the Pacific. By rod tipping to the fish with a bait or artificial lure, the fish is hooked in the forward part of the mouth area.
Not having deeply swallowed a bait which gets lodged in the gut or gills and may well result in death, the uninjured fish jumps more and fights longer.
The hookup is a spectacular thrill with the fish often doing multiple sets of jumps. Every hook up counts, even if the fish throws the hook. The fish runs hard, making handling the tired fish by the mate feasible so the hook can be taken out of the forward part of the mouth.
A healthy fish is released. In Randy's words, "I am convinced hook retrieval is vital to the survival of the sailfish or marlin, as well as to the gratification of the angler."
Randy has led his clients to IGFA records on conventional and fly tackle. He encourages and teaches all anglers to hook their own billfish, whether novices or experienced anglers. Our highly experienced crews and well-equipped boats provide for a fishing adventure you will not soon forget!
