Tropical Desertification on the Periphery Of the Las Baulas National Marine Park |

(JFS) In a country that is acclaimed for it's vast biodiversity, it is appalling some of the environmentally destructive construction practices that are allowed. Especially when these practices are condoned right up to the edge of a National Park in Costa Rica's most popular tourist destination.
Costa Rica seems steadfastly determined to turns it's unspoiled natural resources into a Miami or Cancun style development completely lacking one iota of infrastructure --- dumb, dumber & dumbest.
Picture (missing source): missing caption Once again the Municipality of Santa Cruz (or the Powers-That-Be) has
given a Carte Blanc permission to cut all trees on a large parcel of
land irregardless of the size, age or specie of tree. These lands
border Brock & Midge Menking to the south and Cabinas Rodamar to
the North. Most disconcerting is the fact that these tree cutting
permits are given with the blessings of MINAE; our national Parks
Department. How this is possible without the consent & supervision
of the Forestry Department is beyond the imagination of any intelligent
human being --- human intelligence is obviously not included in the
approval process.
In view of the fact these lands are in the public domain of the
Maritime zone, it is absolutely incomprehensible that the complete
annihilation of every last bit of our native flora & fauna on this
piece of property serves the best interest of the general public in any manner whatsoever. To virtually all long time residents, the
indiscriminate “Clear Cutting” of all trees and other species prior to
construction is asinine to say the least in a country that proclaims to
protect the environment and to ecologically minded!.
Picture (missing source): Missing caption With the smallest
degree of forethought and planning many trees could easily be
accommodated in the open spaces between structures, in parking areas
and along the perimeter of properties to provide cooling shade in the
summer time, vastly improve the ascetics of new projects and not
deplete the food and fodder, breeding sites and overall habitat of our
native animal species.
To add insult to injury and further demonstrate their ineptitude and
Cro-Magnon intelligence quotient, this project proposes to build yet
another commercial center and an 11-story condominium tower! In view
of the fact that there is an oversupply of both condos and store
fronts, it is also obvious that supply and demand rate the same degree
of importance as the words ecology and environment. We truly have a
situation of “the blind leading the blind” when we have development for
evelopment sake and both the economic feasibility and environmental
degradation are of absolutely no concern.
