| Gold Coast Private Schools Show Big Growth |
| Friday, 13 June 2008 | |
(TBT) A graduation ceremony at any school might be seen as a rite of passage, but at the Country Day School’s Brasilito campus in Guanacaste, it is a sign of growth.Fifteen students took to the stage last Friday to receive diplomas — 12 more than last year. “One of the unusual things about Guanacaste is the turnover of students coming here,” said Bob Trent, the school’s interim principal. “We get lots of new people every year but there are also a lot of people leaving. “So while there’s a base that kind of stays the same. Some of these kids (graduating) have been here since the beginning. In a way that kind of typifies the population here.” Country Day School, which offers a US college preparatory curriculum, had an enrollment this year of 148 students. It expects to have 163 students when school resumes in August. Mr Trent added that while there are a lot of people coming to Costa Rica because of their jobs, there are those that just “want the Costa Rica Experience”. “At Escazú, our other campus, most of the people are there because their business brings them to Costa Rica,” Mr Trent said. “And while that’s true for some people here, who are on tourism business, a lot of the people that come here are deliberately taking a break. They’re coming here just to enjoy the experience of the country.” ![]() Photo Zoraida Diaz: Class of 2008. Country Day School, Brasilito The La Paz Community School, which opened in Playa Flamingo just eight months ago with 50 students, says they expect to return in the new school year with an enrollment of 85. La Paz will be adding 15 kindergarten students to its kindergarten to seventh-grade program, and as a result, will place two portable, prefabricated classrooms on the existing lot in the back of the school. “There’s a big possibility when we expand to high school level we will have to change to another location,” said Abel McClennen, President of La Paz Community School. “Right now we have a land acquisition committee that has been put together with some parents and community members,” Mr McClennen said. “They’re researching and looking at all avenues how we can expand… whether it is through a land donation or some kind of expansion here in the school, using the neighboring property or property here in the school,” Mr McClennan said. Next month school’s board of directors, made up of teachers, parents and members of the community, will hold its annual assembly meeting where land acquisition and the school’s expansion are expected to be high on the agenda.
