(jfs) Dale Doshack, retiree and early settler to Tamarindo, passed on Monday, Dec. 24nd at age 73, after a courageously fought battle with respiratory cancer spanning over a decade.
In simple terms,Dale was a “Down to Earth” type of guy; a man of principle and strong convictions, a man of honor, love and respect. He was fine neighbor and a Good Spirit beloved by many here and abroad. His passing is a great loss to those of us who knew him. Memorial services were held Sunday, Dec. 30th at ...

Dale Francis Doshack, son of Elmer and Catherine McCarthy Doshack, was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on January 31, 1934. Raised on the family farm in Otho Iowa, Dale learned to work hard and think independently. These qualities manifested themselves in adulthood when he became owner and operator of two businesses.
Upon graduation from high school and the early death of his father, Dale left the family farm and joined the army. Following his discharge, he migrated to California working first for PG&E and eventually forming a partnership with Jerry Derus to operate a company called Champion Products which made waterless hand soap particularly for the petroleum service industries.
In 1968, Dale partnered with Lloyd Pearson in Pearson Equipment and Maintenance Company, installing underground tanks and petroleum equipment. This partnership lasted for 24 years until the retirement of Lloyd Pearson, who remained his life-long friend.
Dale married Kathleen Novotny on July 6, 1963 in San Jose, California where their two children, Donna Marie and David, were born and raised. During this period, Dale encouraged the move of his mother, Catherine, to California where she was an integral and valued member of the family.

In 1991, Dale and Kathleen retired, sold their home and business and moved to Tamarindo Beach in Costa Rica arriving on October 19, 1991. They became active members in their new community, traveled the world and delighted in making many new friends. Dale’s mother remained in California and Dale would make two to three trips a year to see her and maintain and nurture his many friendships.
Also arriving in Tamarindo in 1991 was daughter, Donna, who made herself and integral part of the local community. With great delight, Dale and Kathy hosted their friends and family and the local communities of Tamarindo, Villarreal and Santa Rosa at the marriage of Donna to Greidin Lopez Rosales in 1993.
The joy of Dale’s life were his two granddaughters, Katarina and Mariana. Dale was an active participant in their lives and loved to make things for them or fix things that might have gotten broken or help them with school projects. His legacy will be in their memories and those of his loving family and friends.
Dale died at 12:30 a.m. the morning of December 24. He was at peace with both Donna and me beside him. He had a wonderful three days on Thursday, Friday and Saturday holding court and visiting with all his friends. On Sunday, he was in a coma and was ready at last to let go.
We had his memorial service on Sunday, December 30 here at the house at 5 p.m. in front of the ocean, the place he loved best. We sang and told stories about Dale, cried a little and laughed a lot.
Thank you for being his friends. Kathy, Donna, Greidin, Katarina and Mariana
