2007 - Brought in a Bumper Crop of Locust
Thursday, 03 January 2008
Photo (JFS): Laying in Wait(JFS) Yes, that's right locust of all things. Why would anyone even notice?  Because you can't possibly avoid not noticing these critters. In the evenings they are attracted to lights and commonly roost in entry ways, and when you try and sneak past them to get in your front door, guess what? They invariable take flight in your direction with four bright red wings buzzing your way.

These guys range up to four inches in length with a good six inch wingspan.  So when they lift off most people do likewise. It use to be quite a show in the ...

... evenings at Tamarindo Resort Club when in the middle of a cold one, a couple or three of these big buzz bombs would come flying in out  of the night, invariably at eye level.

Women would shriek and scream, men would fall off their bar stools and spill their beers, and all us not so old timers would sit back and watch the whole bar get turned upside down in 3-seconds flat. It is amazing what a couple of big bugs can do.

Almost every year these buggers make an appearance towards the end of the rainy season, but this year there were more than ever and they have persisted for the last four months or so, longer than ever.

Have "No Fear" the don't bite and it is very seldom that one will even land upon you, but they sure get one's attention.

So watch out for the not so Killer "Chapolines", they lay and wait  and when you least expect it.
