(By John McPhaul Reuters) The U.S. mortgage crisis has hit Costa Rica's once booming vacation home market, with sales plummeting as Americans who dream of buying a tropical getaway struggle to find financing.
U.S. retirees and vacationers often pay for beach homes along Costa Rica's jungle-fringed beaches by taking out mortgages on their homes in the United States, but trouble in the banking sector has made that more difficult, realtors say.

(TBT) Water, Regulatory Plans and More Power to Municipalities
Costa Rica’s central government last week unveiled a major strategic plan aimed at tackling Guanacaste’s infrastructure and development for years to come.
Water, garbage collection and disposal, regulatory plans and increased autonomy for the region’s municipalities are all included in a strategy outlined by President Oscar Arias’ cabinet, meeting in Nicoya on Friday.

(AM Costa Rica) President Óscar Arias Sánchez and other government ministers are about to release a decree specifying the new development regulations in the Provincia de Puntarenas.
The decree states that the new specifications will limit mass, density and height of buildings to benefit Costa Rica's tourist reputation and go along with the country's phrase “no artificial ingredients.”

(TBT) A graduation ceremony at any school might be seen as a rite of passage, but at the Country Day School’s Brasilito campus in Guanacaste, it is a sign of growth.
Fifteen students took to the stage last Friday to receive diplomas — 12 more than last year.
“One of the unusual things about Guanacaste is the turnover of students coming here,” said Bob Trent, the school’s interim principal.

(TBT) Costa Rica signed a $90 million environmental protection law yesterday, marking the start of World Environment Day festivities across the country.
Energy and Environment Minister Roberto Dobles confirmed Thursday’s approval of the Proyecto EcoMercados I, phase two of a project launched in 2001 by the National Forestry Financing Fund (FONAFIFO) to pay landowners and businesses for environmental protection services.

(Casagua Horses) It has been over thirty years since my first white-knuckle landing at the Juan Santa Maria Airport in San José.
In preparation for my month-long visit, I had read about the history of this small Latin American country known as the Switzerland of Central America but, being an ecologist, I was far more interested in its amazing biodiversity, anxious to see the giant trees of the tropical forest canopy, home to the resplendent quetzal, howler monkeys and blue morpho butterflies.

Renate Herberger has been swimming the Costa Rican Pacific coastline in an effort to bring more awareness to the preservation of marine sanctuaries.
Renate Herberger has been on a two-month oceanic journey since February 1, 2008, swimming from the Panamanian border and heading north up the Costa Rican Pacific coast.
As her journey comes to a close, she will be conducting her final event on....
